Around
200 nautical miles East of Bali in Indonesia, is the
magical island of Flores, in terms of culture and tourism,
it is as far removed again from Bali as you can imagine.
Flores was known as Pulau Nipa (Snake Island) before
the Portuguese arrived and they renamed it Flores (Flower
Island). A very long thin Mountainous land with
such diverse terrain, looking like a cross between the
West coast of Scotland, The Caribbean and Bali eat your
heart out for the amount of fabulous rice paddies, going
from fertile green areas to rocky arid landscapes, every
turn of a corner brings a new surprise, with the climate
in the lowlands dry and hot, to out and out cold in
the highlands, we've even seen Scotch Mist?????
With so many mountains and volcanoes, as you can imagine
the road system is less than direct and although the
length of the island is 360 kilometers, the road system
is over 800 kms of winding spectacular scenery filled
roads connecting Labuan Bajo in the West to Maumare
in the East. You need to allow a lot of time for
journeys by Land. |
