The rains haven't started yet, it's so hot here;o) Lots and lots of Mantas around, some huge ones to;o)
some windy, wavy days but lots to see, sharks are in mating mode, there really is a lot of fish around. 2 ghost pipe fish, mandarin fish and plenty leaf fish, nice trip to Cannibal rock to see the frog fish and the strange critters down there;o)

Oct 30, 2007

Well, a sad farewell to Simon and Ing, we'll miss you guys;o( They had some stunning dives before they left, here's what they wrote......Crystal was the strongest current ever seen at the front, hooked on and being buffeted by what felt like force 10 wind. With white tips mating in front of us. Very special.
Lighthouse was down currents off the plateau, huge groupers heckling each other 1 foot from us and a devil ray gliding in and playing around the pinnacles! Incredible with all the fusiliers playing above us, the GT's Hunting in front of our noses and then a manta came to say goodbye :-)
we had manta's cleaning on airstrip and bamboo sharks hunting a foot from us, batu bolong came up with at least ten different nudi's (varicose not included) and manta corner was screaming and all we saw was fish :-)
Oh and we had 2 huge whales alongside us for half and hour by lighthouse, we wanted to say bye bye but uta (s7) kept on following them :-). He was definitely as excited as we were, and henki even more so or perhaps a little nervous?
They were grey (ish), when they rose out the water we saw the main body (about 5/6 metres long) but not the tail, the water came out the blowhole about a metre;o))

The 8 Grey sharks have now gone back to 2, maybe they were here to mate who knows, it was wonderful to see them, some were huge and had a lot of battle scars! Professional photographer Attila A Bicskos from Australia dived with us for a week, check out his site http://www.ambproductions.com.au/
One dive we had a Giant trevally take a bite out of a Surgeon fish, as it opened it's mouth to swallow it the poor surgeon fish escaped under a coral head, then the Giant trevallys surround the coral and out races the surgeon to narrowly make it under another coral, only for a wee white tip reef shark to go under and come out with only the tail of the surgeon sticking out of it's mouth, the Giant trevally gave chase and was not a happy chappy to lose it's dinner to the shark, nature is so cruel;o(
2 huge (130cm) African pompanos spotted at Coral garden, looks a little like the Giant trevallys, but meaner, if that's possible;o)
7 mantas feeding around us, one so curious it hit the head of one of our divers with it's wing tip!! with a fusilier highway behind them it was beautiful. Some strong currents over the last 2 weeks, but great diving;o) One of the biggest Great barracudas I've ever seen at Crystal rock. And I would never mention the name of the diver who came up after a dive at full moon having finished his role of Film in 10 mins to finally agree he had to get a housing for his digital camera, bribes will be accepted to keep quiet;o))) More bamboo sharks found and of course more new nudibranchs that we can not identify, very frustrating!!

Awww another Dolphin moment for us, she just swooped in like a silver ghost into the middle of the schools of fusiliers we were watching and started chasing a fish around and around a coral head, then she shot up to the surface leaped out and back down to start again, a really wonderful moment, she came back again about 5 mins later for a short time, then with a quick flick of her tail she was gone, but one of our guests managed to video her;o)) the show the grey sharks, Tuna, white tip sharks, giant and blue fin trevallys were putting on, had to take second place;o) Then if that was not enough our second dive we had 2 mantas circling us, not a bad day;o)) Yesterday we had dolphins jumping around us before we got in the water, we could hear them all through the dive whistling and squeaking, Eva caught a glimpse of them at the surface, then our divers at Crystal rock had a surprise visit by one;o) Check out some more photos of Komodo from Albert and Marcel http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Album=4VTILHAE
still waiting for the photos from the rest of the Spice girls, Mark, Hanna and Mikael! Today 25th, yet another Dolphin visit, before we saw them, all of the schools of fish shot towards us to hide, then up they popped the silver shadows, they are huge! and of course more manta happenings in the afternoon dive, around 30 minutes with 3 circling us;o)) our friend Ian took 90 shots and was limited to that because of the recharge time for his strobe;o))

Jul 08, 2007

first week of July has had very calm days but also some windy days, lots of lovely diving, visibility goes on forever, water a wee bit chillier 27c. Sea snakes and octopus about on the reefs, lots of turtles and sharks, with Napoleon wrasse seemingly waiting on every corner;o) Photographers dream with 2 mantas feeding around us for most of one dive, very cute yellow painted frog fish found and he's there everytime we go back which is wonderful, giant green and a giant black frog fish found at a different site, so well hidden if you didn't know they were there you would have no chance of spotting them, lovely wee black ghost pipe fish at coral garden;o) Greys sharks still showing off in the current.

Jun 30, 2007

A great start to June with dolphins and grey sharks seen at full moon
Lots of beautiful Mandarin fish, also ghost pipe fish and a school of devil rays. Eagle rays popping up all over and of course still lots of sightings of the fabulous mantas, visibility excellent, water 27-29c quite a bit of wind and some waves, but not enough to stop us diving;o)) 2 sightings of a leopard shark, very nice;o)) And with new additions to the Reefseekers family, 5 Ducklings!! how cute are they?

May 31, 2007

Warm, turquoise waters and plenty of marine life makes for very happy divers;o) with the biggest group of blue fin trevallys we've ever seen, you usually see between 6-10 in a mafia style group heckling the other fish, but one dive had over 100 of them swarming around us, maybe they were tired of being chased off by the Giant trevallys and had come out in force! Lots of Manta moments and a huge yellow frog fish spotted at 3 sisters, with a big swell and cold water it was certainly a challenging dive;o) We dropped in to check out a new site and had a Manta, turtle, white tip sharks, bamboo shark an octopus, reindeer wrasse and loads of nudibranchs and beautiful coral, not bad at all. Nobody can fail to be impressed with the Mandarin fish and we've spotted quite a few this month. First time I've seen a pregnant manta, or maybe the first time I've realised;o) Now for all of you who think there is nothing to see in British waters check out this web site, our friend Jackie tags basking sharks in her spare time!! www.manxbaskingsharkwatch.com/index.aspx

Apr 12, 2007

The visibility has gone from 10mts to beautiful blue clear water, lots of Mantas now at the airstrip and we had an underwater sighting of 3 dolphins at Crystal rock, so many nudibranchs, some we've never seen before, hopefully our guests will send on their photos to me, pretty please;o)) Strong currents on a dive at Batu Bolong had 2 huge mantas showing off how easy it is to play in these currents, not for us though as we tucked in as close to the reef as possible to watch the show;o) Cannibal Rock and Nurdins spirit doing us proud with her host of strange and wonderful critters;o) Water temp coming back up also with 28/29 in the Northern sites. We had a huge Giant Trevally circling us for about 10 mins at Chinese pagoda at the end of a dive, not sure what his intentions were, join us, or get rid of the pesky remora which seemed to be irritating the life out of him;o)

Mar 31, 2007

As soon as I'd written about not much rain, the heavens opened and the rainy season really got started, visibility reduced but still so much to see;o)

Mar 22, 2007

Still not much rain in this area, not a very wet Rainy season this year for Komodo. Lots of very nice diving, banded sea snakes, plenty of Mantas and the amount of flatworms and nudibranchs is wonderful;o) White tips, Greys and black tips plentiful and a huge spaceship like black blotched ray taking off into the current was amazing to see, more leaf fish found in every colour available, schools of fusiliers everywhere;o)
